A truck driver identified by Sikh advocates as a Punjabi Sikh was seriously injured in a stabbing inside the Bitter Creek Rest Area on Interstate 80 in Wyoming.
According to the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called at approximately 3:27 a.m. and found the victim suffering from multiple cuts and stab wounds. He was initially taken for emergency treatment and later reportedly airlifted to a trauma centre.
Court records cited by local media allege that the victim was stabbed 17 times. Wyoming Highway Patrol officers arrested 45-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak near Rawlins less than 90 minutes after the first emergency call. Prosecutors have charged him with attempted first-degree murder.
Investigators have not announced a motive. Therefore, the incident has not been officially classified as a hate crime. Sikh organizations are urging authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation amid broader concerns about the safety of Sikh and immigrant truck drivers.
