Gloria Steinem, the influential American journalist and women’s-rights campaigner, has died at age 92. Her foundation said she died at her home in New York.
Steinem emerged as a prominent figure in the American feminist movement during the 1960s and 1970s. She co-founded Ms. magazine in 1971 and helped establish organizations including the National Women’s Political Caucus and the Ms. Foundation for Women.
Her journalism and advocacy addressed workplace discrimination, political representation, reproductive rights and broader questions of social equality. Steinem remained involved in public campaigns well into her later years.
President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
