Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has issued 229 invitations to apply for permanent residence in a category-based Express Entry round for physicians with Canadian work experience.
The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score was 198. Eligible candidates generally needed at least 12 months of qualifying Canadian work experience in an approved physician occupation during the previous three years.
An invitation allows a candidate to submit a permanent-residence application but does not guarantee approval. Applicants must continue to satisfy all immigration requirements.
Permanent residence also does not automatically authorize a doctor to practise medicine. Physicians must separately meet the licensing requirements established by the province or territory where they intend to work.
Why it matters: The draw is intended to retain doctors with Canadian experience at a time when many communities face shortages of family physicians and specialists.
