U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Christian Castro has been taken back into custody in Texas after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts of making false statements about the shooting of Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.
The shooting occurred in Minnesota during an immigration-enforcement operation in January. Federal prosecutors allege that Castro fired through a door without lawful justification and subsequently provided an account contradicted by video evidence.
Castro also faces state assault charges and has reportedly been suspended by the Department of Homeland Security. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless convicted in court.
A federal civil-rights investigation into the incident is also underway.
Why it matters: Federal prosecution of an immigration-enforcement officer is uncommon and could increase demands for transparency and accountability during ICE operations.
