Chandigarh, Thousands acres of land in South-western districts of the state, affected by salinity and water-logging, now proving boon for farmers due to the strenuous efforts of Punjab Govt. Disclosing this here today, Punjab Rural Development and Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister, It is very difficult to cultivate any crop in such areas due to the salinity but with the uphill efforts of Fisheries department, the saline affected water-logged land has emerged as congenial for shrimp culture, Mr. Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said.

The state govt is committed to promote shrimp farming in these areas and due to these efforts, area under shrimp farming has increased to 410 acres during the year 2019-20 against 252 acres of 2018-19 as a result of financial and technical support of the department, He apprised. The Minister further said that gross production of shrimp is crossed 750 tonnes mark during year 2019-20 as compared with 520 tonnes of 2018-19. Farmers can earn profit of Rs. 3 to 5 lacs from 1 acre of land from shrimp farming after culture period of 120 days, The further said. “The fisheries department was providing financial assistance to the farmers up to 2.5 acres areas of their own land for shrimp culture but now the State Govt has decided to expand shrimp farming on large scale.

Hence, limit of financial assistance for shrimp farming has increased from 2.5 to 5 acres” Mr. Bajwa adding that the farmers who don’t have their own land can also make fortune from shrimp farming by taking land on lease for a minimum period of 10 years. The Minister urged farmers to adopt Shrimp farming after imparting training of proper techniques with the guidance of Fisheries Officers, so that handsome income could be earned from these waste-lands.
