AAP nominated Padma Shri awardees, environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Philanthropist Vikramjit Sahney, for Rajya Sabha
Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) named Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, a prominent environmentalist, and Vikramjit Singh Sahney, a social activist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist for the Rajya Sabha elections to be held on two seats in Punjab. Both the candidates are Padma Shri awardees and sure to be elected unopposed.
Sant Seechewal has done outstanding environmental works. Seechewal cleaned 160 kilometres of the Kali Bein River by himself in 2007. He and his cleaning model became recognised all over the world as a result of this cleanliness campaign. Seechewal was honoured with the Padma Shri award for his tireless and selfless efforts to protect the environment. People also call him by the name of ‘Eco Baba’.
Vikramjit Singh Sahney, the other nominee, assisted the people of rural Punjab with testing clinics, ambulances, and 2000+ oxygen cylinders during the Covid outbreak, and played a critical role in saving many lives. He’s also done a lot of effort to help more than 500 Sikhs who have returned from Afghanistan get back on their feet.
He is an active promoter of Punjabi culture and language. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, a social worker, has made important contributions in the field of education and has been involved in social welfare work for many years. The President of Mauritius has awarded Vikramjit Sahney with International Peace Prize.
He has pushed for the spread of Punjabi culture around the world by founding the World Punjabi Parliamentary Forum. Sahney has also organized several programs like ‘Bole So Nihal’, ‘Guru Manyeo Granth’ and ‘Sarbansdani’ and provided scholarships to thousands of Punjabi students.
While serving as the International President of the World Punjabi Organization, Vikramjit Sahney has made important contributions to strengthening Punjab’s social, economic, and cultural ties in more than 22 nations.

After the announcement of the Rajya Sabha candidates, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted, “I am happy to inform that Aam Aadmi Party is nominating two Padma Shri awardees for Rajya Sabha from Punjab. Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has received Padma Shri for his great work as environmentalist and Vikramjit Singh Sahni for promoting Punjabi culture. My best wishes to both of them.”

Kejriwal tweeted, “Congratulations to both the declared candidates of Aam Aadmi Party for Rajya Sabha from Punjab. I am sure that AAP candidates, using their vast experience and knowledge, will become the voice of common people of Punjab in Rajya Sabha.” Senior AAP leaders and Rajya Sabha members Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak also congratulated both the nominees.
Raghav Chadha tweeted, “Padmashree Balbir Singh Seechewal ji was instrumental in the rejuvenation of tributaries of Sutlej and Beas. He was named as one of the Top 30 Environment Heroes in the World by Times Magazine. His expertise and experience as an environmentalist will be an asset to the Parliament.”
