New Delhi: The government will change all electricity meters into smart prepaid meters across the country in three years.
The purpose of this decision of the Power Ministry is to reduce the losses in the transmission and distribution of electricity.
The Power Ministry has decided to make all meters smart prepaid from 1st April 2019.
In a statement released on Monday, the officials said that the move towards smart meters is a pro-poor step as the consumers need not pay the entire month’s bill in one go, they can pay as per their requirements.
Working of Smart Meters –
All smart meters will be connected to the control room made in the power corporation.
Through SCADA software, the employee will be able to note meter-reading.
Along with this, if someone tries to tamper with the meter, then the signal will be originated in the control room.
If a consumer does not pay electricity bill at the time, then his meter connection will be cut from the control room itself.
Installation of smart meters will computerize the entire billing and collection process.
