The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has created an app that will alert you 30-40 minutes before lightning strikes. The name of this app is Damini.
This app also gives preliminary information about lightning and provides rescue information.
You can download it from the Google Play Store for free.
The work on this app has been going on for the last 6 months.
S D Pawar, a senior researcher of the team that created this, told that the app also tells about how to protect and get the first aid, along with the information of lightning.
“Whenever a person is within 20-km radius of the lightning event, the app will send warnings… the alert will be sent 30 minutes to 45 minutes before the event and this will help people get to safer locations,” said Pawar.
Dr. Pawar further said that on opening the app you will come across a map showing your location where you are at present.
This circle will alert about a 20-kilometer radius of the lightning event in the next 30-40 minutes.
The information will be given in Hindi and English and it is expected to add more regional languages also.
