ICMR Director-General Balram Bhargava on Thursday said DRDO’s anti-COVID-19 drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) is not a new medicine but a “repurposed” one. He stated that the drug was earlier used for cancer treatment.

“Its trial results have been given to Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI),” the ICMR chief added. The oral drug was cleared for emergency use on May 8.
