Chandigarh: Bibi Jagir Kaur was acquitted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, in connection with the murder of her daughter Harpreet Kaur (2000), and forced the abortion.
In addition, the CBI and Kamaljit Singh’s appeal to increase the punishment of the woman has been dismissed.
Patiala Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court sentenced Jagir Kaur five years in jail for kidnapping and forced abortion of her daughter in 2012.
However, Bibi challenged the decision with an appeal in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and demanded the abolition of the sentence.
Since then, Bibi Jagir Kaur, former President of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and President of Women’s Wing of Shiromani Akali Dal, was outside on bail.
The High Court Double Bench, in a pronouncing judgment, confirmed, “All appeals filed by the convicted accused are allowed. They are acquitted of all charges. The judgment of the trial court is set aside. Appeals filed by the CBI and complainant are dismissed.”
The High Court today acquitted Bibi Jagir Kaur. In this case, a division bench of Justice AB Chaudhari and Justice Kuldip Singh reserved the decision in October.
