Thai police investigate suspected cross-border kidnapping operation reportedly directed by a Dubai-based handler
BANGKOK/PATTAYA, July 30, 2026 — Thai authorities have arrested five Indian nationals in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of three Indian tourists who were rescued from a townhouse in Pattaya.
According to Thai police accounts reported by local media, the suspects were detained on Tuesday at a hotel in Bangkok’s Khlong Tan area while preparing to leave Thailand. The three victims had been rescued the previous evening during a police raid on a two-storey property in Pattaya.
Investigators allege that the tourists, aged between 20 and 24, were attracted by an inexpensive seven-day Thailand holiday package. After arriving in Bangkok on July 21, they were reportedly taken individually from a Pattaya meeting point to the townhouse, where they were confined in separate rooms.
Police said the men were found with their hands and feet restrained and their mouths covered with tape. Investigators also reported signs of physical assault.
Families allegedly received ransom videos
The investigation began after relatives of the tourists contacted the Indian Embassy in Thailand. Family members reportedly received video calls and recordings showing the victims restrained and being assaulted.
Police said the abductors demanded ₹40 lakh—approximately US$41,800—from each victim’s family. If collected from all three families, the combined demand would have amounted to ₹1.2 crore. The alleged plan called for the money to be transferred through cryptocurrency.
The Indian Embassy subsequently alerted Chon Buri Immigration Police and Pattaya City Police. Investigators used security-camera footage and other intelligence to locate the property where the tourists were being held.
During the raid, officers reportedly recovered adhesive tape, a wooden object believed to have been used during the assaults and red spray paint. Police suspect the paint was used to make photographs and videos appear more disturbing and increase pressure on the families.
Alleged organizer believed to be in Dubai
During questioning, the arrested men allegedly told investigators that they had received instructions through a messaging application from a Pakistani national believed to be living in Dubai.
Police said the suspected organizer intended to receive the ransom in cryptocurrency. The arrested men were allegedly promised money, valuables and airline tickets after completing the operation.
The alleged organizer has not been arrested, and investigators have not independently established his identity or role. The claim currently rests on statements attributed to the detained suspects.
Police are also examining an allegation that another Indian citizen was held at the same property before the three tourists arrived and was released after relatives reportedly paid approximately ₹30 lakh.
The three rescued men are reported to be safe. The investigation remains active and could involve cooperation among authorities in Thailand, India and other jurisdictions.
Legal status: The five arrested individuals are suspects and have not been convicted. Allegations involving the reported Dubai-based organizer and the earlier captive remain unproven.
