Thiruvananthapuram: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) appointed Harvard professor and Kerala adviser Gita Gopinath as its Chief Economist on Monday.

The 46-year-old Gopinath was “the first Indian after Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to receive such an outstanding honour beside being the third woman ever” when she was appointed permanent professor in the economics department at Harvard University in 2010.

As a minister for agriculture, the new chief economist of IMF had worked in the team of veteran communist KR Gowri Amma.

Gopinath did her schooling from Delhi, Mysuru and Kolkata.

In Delhi, she completed her graduation in B.A. Economics from Lady Shri Ram College while she did her M.A. Economics from Delhi School of Economics and University of Washington.

She went on to pursue her PhD from Princeton University.

Moreover, she is the managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies.

And in 2011, she was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.

Among the numerous positions that she holds is Research Program Member at the International Growth Center at LSE (London School of Economics) and Oxford and Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research.

She lives with her husband Iqbal Dhalibal and son Rohil in Weston, Massachusetts.
