The Income Tax Department froze deposits worth over ₹53 core of an urban credit cooperative bank based in Maharashtra after finding glaring irregularities in accounts.

“More than 1,200 new bank accounts were opened in the said branch without PAN,” CBDT said, adding that multiple cash deposits of exact denomination of ₹1.9 lakh each were made. The amount totalled ₹53.72 crore.
