WASHINGTON: An Indian-American woman has been voted as the president for the Harvard University’s students’ body.
20-year-old Sruthi Palaniappan was elected as the Harvard University Undergraduate Council’s President.
In 1992, the parents of Sruthi migrated to the US from Chennai.
Julia Huesa, also 20, was her running mate has been elected as the vice-president.
Sruthi said that Ms. Julia and she had planned to work on improving the communication of Council with the student body in their initial days in office.
To the student newspaper of the varsity, Harvard Crimson, Palaniappan told, “I think we’re going to work on it before we even leave for break and just get off the ground running.”
In July 2016 at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Sruthi was the youngest delegate.
Currently, Ms. Palaniappan is the council’s education committee chair.
Sruthi and Julia acquired about 41.5% of the votes as against their nearest opposition Arnav Agrawal and Nadine M Khoury, who garnered 26.6% of the votes, according to reports.
