Indian nationals continued to hold a significant position in the United Kingdom’s immigration system, according to the latest official statistics released by the UK Home Office.
During the year ending June 2026, 24,851 Indian nationals were granted British citizenship, making Indians the largest nationality group in this category. Pakistani nationals ranked second with 18,489 citizenship grants.
India also remained one of the leading sources of international students. Approximately 83,000 sponsored study visas were granted to Indian applicants, the second-highest number after China. Together, Indian and Chinese students accounted for nearly 46 per cent of sponsored study visas issued to main applicants.Indians also maintained a strong presence in work, settlement and visitor-visa categories. However, the broader figures show that the UK’s immigration environment is tightening. Overall work-visa grants declined by 18 per cent from the previous year, while sponsored study-visa grants fell by 11 per cent.
The citizenship figures largely reflect established migration patterns. Many Indian nationals receiving British citizenship had previously lived in the UK under employment-related visas, obtained permanent settlement and later fulfilled the requirements for naturalisation.
These statistics describe applications and immigration decisions recorded during the reporting period. They do not represent the introduction of a new visa programme or any automatic right to settlement or citizenship
