Indore and Surat have been jointly declared the winners of the Smart Cities Award 2020 of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development while Uttar Pradesh topped the state award category. Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu lagged behind Uttar Pradesh this time.

The awards are based on topics such as social aspects, governance, culture, urban environment, sanitation, economy, environment, water and urban transport. Surat was the sole winner in Smart Cities in 2019. This is the first time that the states have also been awarded based on their overall performance in Smart Cities.
