Johannesburg: A court in Durban, South Africa has sentenced Mahatma Gandhi’s great-granddaughter to seven years in prison. She was charged with fraud and forgery of Rs 60 lakh. Ashish Lata Ramgobin was convicted by a court in the case on Monday. Ashish Lata Ramgobin was accused of cheating businessman SR Maharaj. SR Maharaj paid him 6.2 million rand (African currency) in advance as import and customs duty for a consignment in India. Ashish Lata Ramgobin spoke of contributing to that benefit.

Ashish Latha Ramgobin was denied permission to appeal against the charges after being convicted in the Durban Specialized Commercial Crimes Court. It may be noted that Ashish Lata is the daughter of famous activist Ila Gandhi and the late Mewa Ram Govind. The trial against Lata Ramgobin began in 2015. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Brigadier Hangwani Moulodji had said that Ramgobin had provided fake invoices and documents to convince potential investors that three boxes of linen were being shipped from India.
At the time, Lata Ramgobin was granted bail of 50,000 rand. However, he was convicted in the case on Monday and sentenced to life in prison. NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said on Monday, “Lata Ramgobin had said she was facing financial difficulties in meeting the cost of imports and paying customs duties.
