Living in a material world makes our lives strenuous and difficult. The challenges of achieving our material goals makes us work like a machine. Even if we earn lots of money, become famous, acquire all the modern gadgets which make living easy and pursue a lifestyle, we still feel something lacking in our lives.

So what is the use of working so hard and earning a fortune which does not make us feel content? No, I would say, it is not wrong to earn good money but at the same time I would say that there is one more thing to acquire apart from the worldly wealth. That is the wealth of knowing the inner self.

We all have seen newborn babies smiling to themselves or gurgling with glee. He smiles not because he got good marks in exams or laughs because he just got his favourite toy. His happiness is unconditional and pure. The child who is still untouched by the vices of the material world has pure happiness which comes from within. This pure happiness is what we aspire for because this is our basic nature which in Sanskrit is called Chidanand.

Chid is taken from chit which means mind and anand means bliss. Chidanand means happiness of the mind. But as we grow older and step out in this material world our mind gets filled with various kinds of experiences which might be pleasant or unpleasant. These experiences give birth to emotions and desires in us and our minds get entrapped within them. These emotions and desires are the real cause of our unhappiness and miseries.

Now the question is how to attain real happiness along with worldly desires and emotions? Practice of meditation is that exercise which brings you closer to your inner self. Let us understand meditation. Meditation means becoming aware of yourself, knowing your inner self and connecting with nature and the supreme power. There are quite a few techniques of meditation which people follow. Whichever technique is followed, focus is the keyword in meditation.

Sit comfortably in a quiet place with your eyes closed and just focus on the sounds of nature around you. The chirping of the birds, the rustle of the leaves, swish of the wind, sound of the water falling nearby are some of the sounds of nature. These sounds have always been there around you but you were never aware of them. With regular practice of focusing on these sounds you will realize that now you can even hear sounds which are very soft.

You are now slowly getting connected with nature. You become one with nature. Nature permeates in you and you permeate the nature. With further practice of focusing your mind on sounds effortlessly, you can even listen to your own heartbeats. Once you hear your own heartbeat you become aware of yourself as a part of nature. You feel the purity of nature within you. This elevates your senses and you can experience the abundance of nature within you. You experience bliss and now you are in a state of Chidanand. Once you reach this stage, all desires and emotions look superficial and meaningless. A regular practice with increased time of meditation leads you to the path of Chidanand.

Meditation strengthens concentration level of a person. It helps the practitioner remain calm in adverse situations. It enhances thinking power in decision making. It also increases intuitive powers of a person. Meditation makes a person confident and powerful. It unlocks all the potentials which lie latent in a person.
This is a journey travelled within oneself to happiness.
