BRUSSELS — NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the alliance sees no imminent Russian attack on its territory despite a warning from Moscow concerning Kaliningrad. Russia said it could consider nuclear weapons if NATO attempted to isolate the Baltic exclave.
Rutte said any attack on Poland, Finland or the Baltic countries would probably be preceded by a visible military buildup. He also said the United States remains committed to Europe’s conventional and nuclear defence.
Why it matters: The exchange illustrates the danger of nuclear signalling around Kaliningrad, which lies between NATO members Poland and Lithuania. Reuters
