The governors of New York and New Jersey have issued separate proclamations recognizing August 15, 2026, as India Independence Day.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s proclamation acknowledges the Indian-American community’s contribution to the state’s economic, cultural and civic life. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill issued a similar recognition highlighting contributions in education, healthcare, research, technology, business, public service and community leadership.
The proclamations also recognize the longstanding relationship between India and the United States and the role played by Indian-American communities in strengthening cultural and economic connections.
These declarations are ceremonial. They do not create a statutory public holiday, provide paid leave or establish any new legal entitlement.
