The number of reported attacks involving Indian nationals overseas increased significantly over the five years ending in 2025, according to figures presented by India’s Ministry of External Affairs in the Rajya Sabha.
The government recorded 302 incidents across 36 countries and regions between 2021 and 2025. Annual cases rose from 15 in 2021 to 31 in 2022, followed by 67 in 2023, 85 in 2024 and 104 in 2025. The 2025 total was nearly seven times the figure reported in 2021.
The United States recorded the highest cumulative number at 33. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates with 32, the United Kingdom with 31 and Canada with 30. Ireland recorded 24 incidents, Russia 23 and Germany 19.
Country-level figures also showed substantial annual variations. Reported cases in the United States increased from one in 2021 to 14 in 2025. Canada’s annual total rose from three to eight during the same period, while the UAE reported an increase from three to 12. The UK recorded five cases in 2025, down from 10 in 2024.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said Indian missions monitor such incidents and raise them with the authorities of the host country. Distressed nationals may also receive means-tested assistance through the Indian Community Welfare Fund.
The figures represent incidents reported to Indian missions and should not be interpreted as population-adjusted crime rates. They also do not establish that every incident was motivated by racism or hostility toward Indians.
