New Zealand has announced an expansion of its Post-Study Work Visa programme that could create additional employment opportunities for eligible international graduates, including students from India.
Beginning November 16, graduates who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma may qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa if they studied full-time in New Zealand for the entire programme and already hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or another country. The bachelor’s degree is not subject to a time limit, although authorities may verify an overseas qualification’s authenticity.
Eligible graduate-diploma holders may receive open work rights for a period equal to the length of their New Zealand studies, up to a maximum of one year. A person may receive only one Post-Study Work Visa.
Immigration New Zealand also clarified the rules for advanced qualifications. An eligible Level 8 postgraduate diploma may support a one-year work visa, while an eligible Level 9 master’s degree may lead to a visa lasting up to three years. Applicants must generally complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study in the qualification on which their application is based.
The revised criteria could help Indian students gain local work experience after graduation. However, the expanded provisions are not yet operational; applications open on November 16, 2026.
