Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) President and former Union Minister, S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa while objecting to the appointment of a non-Sikh as Managing Director (MD) of Punjab and Sind Bank has appealed to the Central Government to only appoint a Sikh on the top post in the Bank.
S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said that Punjab and Sind Bank was established in 1908 as an independent bank of Sikhs and after independence, the central government had assured the Sikh leaders that only a Sikh would be appointed at its top post. Till date only Sikh has been appointed as the MD of the bank, he added.
“Although after the nationalization of Punjab and Sind Bank in 1980, the number of Sikh officers and employees in the branches of this bank has been steadily declining, but the Central Government has never appointed any non-Sikh as MD of the bank,” said S. Dhindsa.
He said that Punjab and Sind Bank is known as Sikh Bank. Dhindsa has urged Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi to reconsider the appointment and demanded that only Sikhs be appointed to the post.
