The late Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir was posthumously honoured with the 2018 UN Human Rights Prize award.
She was announced as one of the four winners of the award on Friday.
According to a news report, the announcement was made by the President of the UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces through her Twitter handle.
The three other recipients are Brazil’s first indigenous lawyer Joenia Wapichana, Tanzanian activist Rebeca Gyumi and Ireland’s human rights organisation Front Line Defenders.
The award ceremony will be held on December 10 in New York on World Human Rights Day.
After Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan (1978), Benazir Bhutto (2008) and Malala Yousufzai (2013), Jahangir became the fourth Pakistani woman to be accorded with this honour.
Jahangir passed away on 11th February at the age of 66 due to cardiac arrest.
With her outspoken nature, she was known for unrelenting pursuit of human rights and even under extreme pressure and opposition, she remained undaunted.
Also, Asma Jahangir was the first woman to serve as the President of Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan.
