SYDNEY/NEWCASTLE — Ten people were injured after a car drove into a crowd in Newcastle, north of Sydney. Emergency teams transported the injured for treatment while police examined the circumstances.

Authorities’ initial assessment was that the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle. Investigators had not identified evidence establishing that the collision was intentional.

Why it matters: The distinction between an accident and an intentional act is crucial; premature speculation can spread misinformation during a developing emergency.
