The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has asked the Punjab government to transfer the investigation into the Anandpur Sahib case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The decision was taken at an SGPC executive committee meeting chaired by president Harjinder Singh Dhami in Amritsar. Dhami said questions had been raised about both the committee’s internal inquiry and the Punjab Police investigation. He argued that an independent agency should examine the allegations to help establish public confidence in the process. The Times of India
The case began after a woman accused former SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla of sexual assault, wrongful confinement and intimidation. Police registered an FIR at Anandpur Sahib police station on August 21 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The allegations reportedly concern events between February 27 and August 19, including an alleged incident at an SGPC-managed pilgrims’ accommodation. The Tribune
Chawla has rejected the accusations, describing them as false and fabricated. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.
SGPC had earlier appointed a four-member internal panel to examine the matter. Its members included Baldev Singh Kaimpuri, Gurmeet Singh Booha, Bibi Gurinder Kaur Bholuwala and Gurbakhsh Singh Khalsa, with SGPC secretary Balwinder Singh Kahlwan coordinating the inquiry. Dhami said SGPC would approach the Punjab governor if the state government did not respond to its CBI demand within three days. However, the resolution is only a request: no transfer to the CBI had been officially announced at the time of reporting.
