A third Canadian citizen was detained in China, according to sources.
Officials say they can’t release the identity of the Canadian because of the privacy act.
Two other Canadians were detained in China on December 10: Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat and Michael Spavor, a businessman.
The Chinese government claims the detained Canadians are suspected of endangering China’s state security.
Officials said there’s no evidence the new detention is linked to previous detainments.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday said he was “very concerned” about the third detained citizen but noted her case was different from Mr Spavor’s and Mr Kovrig’s.
The third Canadian detention comes amid rising tension between Canada and China after Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in B.C on December 1.
Wanzhou is facing extradition to the U.S. for allegedly using a shell company to do business with Iran.
At the request of the United States, Meng was arrested in Vancouver and has been released on bail.
