Washington: The eminent Indian-American nuclear expert Rita Baranwal has been nominated by the U.S. President Donald Trump to lead the nuclear energy division at Department of Energy.
In a statement, the White House said that Ms Baranwal, if approved by the Senate, will be an assistant secretary of energy, and will also be responsible for the management and development of the Department’s nuclear technology infrastructure and research.
Currently, Ms Baranwal serves as the Director of the GAIN (Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear) initiative.
Rita Baranwal, formerly, served as the Director of Technology Development & Application at Westinghouse.
Moreover, she was a manager at Bechtel Bettis in Materials Technology.
Last week in a blog post, Ms Baranwal wrote, “The unconventional and energetic spirit that created the commercial nuclear energy industry will again transform our country. New, smaller and more efficient reactors are being developed to combat climate change and meet the energy demand.”
