JAKARTA, INDONESIA: Two earthquakes hit in sudden sequence off the southern coast of Indonesia’s Sumba Island on Tuesday morning.
The United States Geological Survey said, a hollow yet moderately strong 5.9-magnitude quake hit at 23:59 GMT, about 40 km (25 miles) off Sumba, an island of around 750,000 people.
15 minutes later, it was followed by a stronger 6.0 quake at a depth of 30 km in the same area.
No immediate information of major damage has been reported.
A worker at the Padadita Beach Hotel, Defis Rinaldi told, “We felt four shakes. People were panicking when the first quake happened and ran out of the hotel, around 40 of our guests.”
Defis added further that it was only for a few seconds and warning was also not issued by the geophysics agency, everything is back to normal now.”
In the Sulawesi Island, Sumba lies around 1,600 km south, which was hit by a destructive quake and tsunami on Friday, killing over 830 people.
