British Columbia: In preparation for cannabis legalisation on Oct. 17, 2018, one after another, Canadian Universities are coming up with new policies.

University of British Columbia (UBC) will allow people to enjoy a puff at most of the areas of the Vancouver campus and in smoking gazebos on the Okanagan campus.

University is putting finishing touches on campus cannabis policies.

Hubert Lai, UBC university counsel, said, “We’re a university, so we’re focused on evidence-based decision making.”

Citing at the latest research, Lai strongly asserted that the behaviour by individuals is not going to change materially after decriminalisation occurs.

“Major effect that people have observed — that researchers have observed is, that when you criminalize activity that people are engaging in any way, all you do is drive the behaviour underground,” said Lai.

UBC Vancouver rules restrict all kinds of smoking in the health zones, where the hospital or other medical buildings are around.

Smoking is also prohibited inside all buildings and within 8m of any doorway on campus.

Cannabis possession is strictly regulated at residences.

However, the administration has left enough space for people who wish to take in legal cannabis on the vast campus.

University of British Columbia’s draft cannabis policy will take effect with legalisation, but it will open to consultation into 2019 which may be subject to change.
