Fatehgarh Sahib: Department of Education of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University under Community engagement programmes initiated a Social Awareness Drive in senior secondary schools of District Fatehgarh Sahib. The drive has been launched with an objective of creating an awakening in the youth of the district on prevailing social evils of Drug Addiction, Cyber-crime, corruption, Girl Child safety and ill effects of social media. The other objectives of the drive also included personality development, life skill training of the school students along with the generation related to cleanliness and maintenance of the surroundings.

Further efforts will be made to cover local concerns, informed Dr. Harneet Kaur Billing, Department Incharge. She said that the teacher-trainees visited Government Senior Secondary School, Randhawa last month to initiate their drive. Interactive sessions on Drug Addiction were carried out. Brainstorming was also done to hear the inner voices of the students on the themes. A pledge was taken by the students to stay away from any kind of intoxicant in their life. She stressed that the entrapment of youth in drug and alcohol abuse, as opposed to engagement in legitimate employment and educational opportunities, poses distinct barriers to the development of individuals and communities.
Recognising and lauding the efforts of the department, Dr Prit Pal Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University said that it is important to educate our youth about the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse, and provide them the emotional support so that they do not feel the need to turn to drugs for stress relief. He added that it is also essential that parents, teachers and the youth themselves are educated about the signs and symptoms of drug abuse, so that they can identify it early and cure the affected person as soon as
possible. A talk on ‘Personality Development’ was delivered by Gagandeep Kaur Tiwana. She discussed the techniques of developing personality. Students posed their queries and shared their problems. It was a kind of stress buster for them. Dr. Bhupinder Singh Ghuman, Head, Department of Education congratulated the department for their efforts for this noble cause and said that drug abuse often affects youngsters during the years when they are completing high school or searching for employment and effective steps are needed to curb this.
