NEW DELHI/BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting India for the first time in seven years to participate in the BRICS summit. The visit reflects a gradual improvement in diplomatic relations following the deadly India–China border confrontation in 2020.
India has recently approved some joint ventures involving Chinese companies, but extensive security screening continues. Visa delays and restrictions on investment, financial technology and industrial equipment also remain obstacles to deeper commercial cooperation.
Several large Chinese companies are reportedly cautious about expanding in India because of regulatory uncertainty. Strategic competition and the unresolved border dispute continue to shape relations between the two Asian powers.
