GULF OF OMAN — A crude-oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile approximately four nautical miles east of Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency.

The crew was reported safe, and no immediate environmental damage was detected. Authorities had not identified the attacker or clarified whether the incident was connected to the continuing confrontation around the Strait of Hormuz.

Why it matters: Even a limited attack near the Strait of Hormuz can raise shipping insurance costs and threaten a route normally carrying roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption.
