AAP had promised home delivery of ration. On the contrary, Chitta is allegedly being delivered to the doorsteps of addicts by the drug peddlers.

Chandigarh – Senior Congress Leader and Punjab’s Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa on Sunday raised a serious concern over the intention of the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government to curb the rapidly escalating drug abuse in Punjab.

Bajwa strongly condemned the AAP government for its inefficiency to chalk out a programme to break the drug peddlers’ necks even after being in power for eight months.

“Several major news publications have been printing news reports relating to the prevalent drug “hot spots”  and growing drug abuse in the state, yet, the police under the AAP government has apparently turned a blind towards these reports. The government has failed to take cognizance of these reports”, LoP added.

MLA to the Qadian assembly segment, Bajwa said that horrifying details relating to the drug menace have been depicted in the media. One common narrative that has come to the fore was that the drug (Chitta) allegedly is delivered directly to the homes of the addicts. As per a news report, the residents of Palasuar village in Tarn Taran district alleged that one particular family in the village is running a drug distribution network in the area and everybody knows about it.

“The AAP had promised the direct delivery of ration to the doorsteps of the beneficiaries. But due to the negligent approach of the AAP government, the drug (Chitta) is allegedly being delivered to the doorsteps of addicts”, said Bajwa.

LoP said that another such report paints a nasty picture of Daulewala Mayer village in the Moga district. As per this report, the village was once infamous for the smuggling of illicit liquor, poppy husk, and opium but over the past few decades, it has become a hotspot for the alleged sale of heroin, smack, and synthetic drugs. The village sarpanch said in the news report that local residents desired to leave the drug trade, but neither the state government nor the local police was serious and sensitive about changing the lives of people.

“It means that the AAP government has no plan or rehabilitation programme for the drug peddlers and addicts to motivate them to better lives. However, before the assembly elections in February 2022, the AAP supremo, Arvind Kejriwal had promised to end the drug problem within four months of government formation”, Bajwa added.
