Tokyo, New York and Barcelona waste-management practices examined
Delhi’s civic authorities are studying waste-management systems used in Tokyo, New York and Barcelona as part of efforts to accelerate the removal of decades-old garbage at the Bhalswa landfill. Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials discussed technology, waste processing, emissions control and integration of informal waste workers with World Bank experts. Authorities face a dual challenge: clearing legacy waste while preventing fresh garbage from continuously adding to the landfill. Heavy rainfall has also slowed recent processing work. The discussions are part of a wider attempt to move Delhi away from giant landfill sites and towards greater segregation, recycling and scientific disposal of municipal waste.
