Aadhaar card

The government directed telecom firms to stop using Aadhar card for e-verification of the old customers and for giving new connections as well.

The Supreme Court (SC), in a landmark judgment last month, restricted the use of Aadhaar card by private firms in the non-existence of a lawful provision.

To meet the terms of the order, the DoT (Department of Telecom) on Friday ordered the telecommunication companies to end the use of Aadhaar-based e-KYC (electronic-know your customer) and report compliance by 5th November.

In a three-page circular, the DoT said, “Aadhaar e-KYC cannot be used for validating the existing customers and even for issuing new connections.”

Moreover, it allowed the use of Aadhar for issuing new connections provided the customer willingly offers it.
