Delhi – Jagdeep Dhankhar , an advocate, a politician and former Governor of West Bengal is elected as new Vice President of India.
Dhankhar is 16th Vice President of India started his career as an advocate in 1979 at Bar Council of Rajasthan. He was senior most designated senior advocate. As a Governor of Bengal, he was seen in frequent run-ins with Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee.
Dhankhar wins the seat by 346 votes. Out of total 780 electors elected members of LokSabha and nominated and elected members of Rajsabha, 725 electors cast their votes. Whereas, total turnout is 92. 94 percent. Dhankhar bagged 528 votes of the total 725 votes that are cast. Dhankhar is candidate of NDA. Margret Alva was candidate of UPA, received 182 votes and 15 were termed invalid.
Dhankhar was also member of Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha from Kishan constitiency. He joined congress when PV Narasimha Rao became Prime Minister. Later, when Ashok Gehlot picked up the pace, Dhanjhar shifted to BJP.
Dhankhar has succeeded M. Venkaiah Nadu. Nadu was 15th Vice President of India.
