“Although it is a welcoming step to create more universities for the youth of Punjab in the state, it is morally not right to focus on the establishment of private universities while the public universities of Punjab are crumbling under financial pressure and burden,” she said. Slamming Captain Amarinder Singh on the issue, Prof Baljinder Kaur said that by bringing in private universities in the state, while the public varsities were crumbling, exposes Captain’s pro-corporate mindset. She said that new institutions needed to be brought in the state but not at the cost of public universities.

She said that  on June 24, 2020, the teachers of Punjabi University, Patiala had urged Captain Amarinder to provide financial assistance to the varsity as it did not even have money for salary disbursement, but till now Captain Amarinder had done nothing to solve the financial burden of the university. “Captain Amarinder has reneged on every promise he had made before coming to power. He has betrayed the people of Punjab and now to give benefit to a handful of its crony corporate houses, Captain is giving a nod for establishment of a private university while on the other hand is letting  important public institutions downgrade by not providing them financial assistance,” she added.

She said that it was morally wrong that Punjabi University, Patiala was still facing a deficit, while a bill was being tabled by Captain Amarinder Singh government for bringing  a private university to set up here with an investment of over ₹ 600 crore for five years.  The AAP leader further said that the abandonment of Punjabi University, which had made the Malwa region immensely rich in the field of education; was an indication that the government was not serious about important institutes like Punjabi University. Prof Baljinder Kaur further said that focusing on the establishment of private universities shows the pro-corporate mindset of Captain Amarinder Singh.

“The poorer sections of Punjab depend on these public universities for their education but sadly these universities are crumbling under financial duress. Instead of solving these problems, Captain is promoting the establishment of private universities which are more expensive and unaffordable for the larger sections of the society,” she added. She said that  this policy of the Captain government shows his corporate and anti-poor agenda. She added that the government should need to make policies to tackle problems being faced by public universities while also building new institutions.
